9th Street, Edmonton

On the west side of the street,
it’s walls covered in faded stucco –
a church,
with a small neon sign
flashing, in faded red,
the words:
“Jesus Saves.”

Directly across
four lanes of traffic

With floor to ceiling plate glass
set in freshly poured superstructure –
a department store.
and standing tall in the paved parking lot,
with bright lights shining off glistening newly
painted multicoloured letters eight feet high,
a billboard
saying:
“L Mart Saves You More.”
